E911 at the University of North Texas
Enhanced 911 (E911) is required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the State of Texas Health and Safety Code. UNT voice over internet protocol (VoIP) telephone service includes E911.
Using E911
Begin by completing E911 training in UNT World Learning.
When you call 911
A 911 telecommunications operator (dispatcher) will:
- Confirm your location.
- Remain with you on the phone until emergency personnel arrives.
- Ask for your name and telephone number.
Seconds count in an emergency. Use your cell phone to call 911 if Microsoft Teams Voice isn’t connecting quickly.
E911 Limitations
E911 is likely limited or unavailable during:
- A campus power outage - If your campus telephone uses a battery backup or uninterruptible power supply (UPS), it may not work during a campus power outage. After power is restored, reset your campus phone so it operates normally.
- A campus network outage - Once network service is restored, reset your campus telephone so it operates normally.
- Scheduled maintenance - E911 and campus phone systems require periodic maintenance and updates to resolve issues. These activities can limit or prevent E911 and telephone service from operating.
- Telephone service outage - If Microsoft Teams isn’t working, E911 and campus phone services are limited or unavailable.
- E911 calls made over UNT’s wireless fidelity (WiFi) or virtual private network (VPN) - E911 calls made while connected to UNT WiFi or VPN won’ connect with 911 emergency services for your area or provide the dispatcher with your exact location. Disconnect from UNT WiFi or VPN service before making a 911 call.
- Service suspension or termination – If your UNT phone service suspended or terminated, E911 won’t work.
