Virtual private network (VPN) remote access guide
In case of campus closure, University of North Texas staff may be called upon to work from home. The following is information that covers the different methods of securely accessing UNT computing resources from off-campus.
Prerequisites
- Internet connectivity — In order to adequately work remotely, it is highly recommended that you have a high-speed internet connection.
- Up to date operating system — The operating system on your computer should have the latest security patches installed. Update your security software at least once a week.
- Antivirus — Have an reputable antivirus solution installed on your computer that is automatically kept up to date.
- Approval — Get approval from your supervisor before you begin working remotely.
Remember
- Use strong passwords — If you’re working from a personally-owned desktop or laptop, UNT can’ enforce its password policy. If you decide to use a personal computer to connect to UNT resources remotely, you’re still required to use a strong password.
- Technical support is limited — Remember, your personal computer is your own. UNT can’t support your computer even if working remotely. The only time you can contact UNT for support is if you need to reset your UNT password.
- Keep sensitive data at work — If you’re working with sensitive data, keep it stored on UNT resources. Sensitive data can’t be stored on personal devices and must be encrypted at all times.
